| Bob Theriault has worked at Hexaport
International, a manufacturer of light gauge steel for residential and
commercial construction, for 13 years. So it's not surprising that when
he decided to build a 1,750-sq ft ranch he chose steel framing. " The energy efficiency of steel is one big advantage. Steel-framed buildings cost less to heat," say Theriault, who is the director of manufacturing at Hexaport. " And steel-framed structures last a lifetime. They stand up better to the elements." Hexaport based in Weare, has manufactured hundreds of thousands of square feet of light gauge steel framing for residential and commercial properties in the United States as well as internationally. Hexaport's patented strong stud is the strongest-capacity stud available and it makes the company's steel structures virtually indestructible even in extreme weather conditions such a hurricanes and heavy snow. But there are numerous other advantages to steel-framed structures including quick and easy assembly. Theriault assembled the steel frame and installed the sheathing for his house in just one month. |
" Even though I'm
experienced in this, building a steel frame building in most cases does
take less time than a wood structure. Because everything is pre-cut, all
there is to do at the site is the assembly." Theriault, who is completely moved into his new home, considers all of steel's advantages: lower energy cost, strength, lower home owner's insurance, easier reselling, making use of an abundant recyclable material, freedom from risk of warping or rotting, and resistance to fires, carpenter ants, termites, and even lightning. "Some might say I'm biased, but to me the advantages of steel are overwhelming."
